JENNIFER LANE Sweet Long Cool Drink'a Water After years of perfecting her keyboard and vocal skills in the Denver and Kansas City markets, Jennifer is taking her brand of rhythm and blues nationwide. This girl can sing!!! "Oklahoma girl Jennifer Lane shows herself to be a brave woman - musically and lyrically- on her new release Sweet Long Cool Drink ‘a Water. During the course of the CD, she takes on everything from danceable funk to Steely Dan-esque grooves to R&B ballads. Her strong, soulful voice glimmers with traces of Bonnie Raitt, Carol King and Aretha, all of whom she pays tribute to through the songs she covers. Lyrically, Lane shows herself as an intrepid explorer, singing and writing songs not only about the familiar territory of love and relationships, but also investigating the less hospitable regions of a depression and suicide. Lane may cover a lot of ground, but her fine record proves that she is equal to the task." -Elizabeth McQueen LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Big Fat Lie |

MISS LAUREN MARIE Introducing Miss Lauren Marie If Lauren Marie is a throwback to an earlier time, and her music is grounded in the country & western and rockabilly of the '50s, then so be it. It's a little like listening to Patsy Cline if Cline had been more of a roots purist, or maybe Brenda Lee if she'd added a little bit of country-soul to her sound. Introducing Miss Lauren Marie wears these influences proudly on its sleeve, delving deeply into both old songs like Gary Bruce's classic "Moody River" and newer stuff that sounds like old stuff, like Bobby Horton's "As My Heart Breaks." The name "Horton" also supplies something of a clue to Marie's sound: both Bobby and Billy Horton are on board, and both have worked on a number of similar projects at Fort Horton Studios. It's Marie's vocals, however, that really separate this project from the run-of-the mill glance back at the music of yesteryear. Her voice, resonant but slightly sweet, captures an innocence quite foreign to contemporary music. Ronnie D. Lankford TRACK LISTING: Just Like Two Drops of Water / Sweet and Easy to Love / A Heart That Isn't True / As My Heart Breaks / Who Cares / Moody River / One Sided Love / How Long Is Forever / Everytime / Three Little Words / Please Take A Picture / The Last Kiss Is The Sweetest / Believe What You Say LISTEN - MP3 Clip! LOST COUNTRY Broken People Lost Country is a group that began recording in 1998a thoroughly modern band that finds sources of inspiration in earlier forms of country: honky-tonk, pre-war and post-war western swing with a touch of folk, blues and country rockmusic that in recent years has been referred to as Americana or alternative country. Others call it industrial resistance music. 15 tracks are included, 10 originals with 5 vintage country tunes mixed in. Members of Lost Country are Jim Colegrove, Jeff Gutcheon, David McMillan and Susan Colegrove. Broken People is their first collection of tunes released and it is also the first release of Cool Groove Records. Jim and Jeff have worked together since the late 1960s. LUCKY PIERRES Cloverleaf "Since the mid-'90s, the players in Dallas cocktail-country band Lucky Pierres have been contentedly plugging along, releasing discs on their own dime and time, not really worrying about signing to a major label or otherwise moving above and beyond their hometown. Not many bands could stay in neutral for so long -- and remain happy there. But here are the Pierres, self-releasing their third disc, Cloverleaf, just pleased to still be together and still making high-quality records. "Just because fame and fortune hasn't followed, that doesn't mean we should give up," says band singer Michele Pittenger. "It would be nice, but it's like winning the lottery in this industry. It just doesn't happen all that often. But we don't ever want to expect that. It would just leave us disappointed." Still, the Pierres have a lot to be proud of, especially when it comes to the breezy Cloverleaf, the group's most eclectic effort yet. "We paint country music with a pretty broad stroke," says Pittenger, who is joined by bassist Bart Chaney, guitarist Philip Prince, steel guitarist Kim Herriage and her drummer husband Frank. "It might be a little mellower than our lastone [1990's My Temptation]. It has some mandolin on it, and we put some organ on there for the first time. But it also has our traditional honky-tonk two-steps." Two of the 14 songs were written by others. Big D Jamboree veteran Helen Hall penned the track, What Else Does She Do Like Me?, and Edie Brickell gave them Mad Dog." -Ft. Worth Star-Telegram LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Dying On the Vine |

LUCKY PIERRES My Temptation "What they are doing is reclaiming country both from the new pop "country" that Nashville cranks out these days and from the alternative country scene as well; there is no irony here because there doesn't need to be. Why hide behind anything when you have a singer, Michele Pittenger, with a voice full of honey and smoke? Why wear goofy, "Yeah, we know" smiles when you're a band that can make tradition sound so new, so fresh?...The Lucky Pierres are adept at turning ancient echoes into new melodies. So good, in fact, that you never even notice them doing it." -Zac Crain-the Dallas Observer For more info check out www.luckypierres.com LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Jacksboro Highway |

ROBYN LUDWICK For So Long Produced by Danny Barnes. Texas Monthly's lead review for July! Now and then, a young artist arrives with such confidence that you wonder where he or she has been hiding. In Robyn Ludwick’s case, it was in Bandera, where she learned to play, then in the anonymity of Austin’s open-mike scene, where she cut her teeth. Admittedly, she had a leg up over her peers from what she’d absorbed from her older brothers, Bruce and Charlie Robison. But Ludwick’s For So Long (self-released; available at robynludwick.com) sounds like neither of her siblings’ work. She slips into a comfortable, evocative country warble. And she’s an even better writer; despite the clumsy opener, songs like the title track, El Dorado, I Am, and Virginia leave you with haunting reverberations. I would love to live my life a long time ago, Ludwick sings, and she does seem inhabited by an old soul. Fortunately, she’s very much with us now. TRACK LISTING: 1. What Do I Know / 2. El Dorado / 3. MATT THE ELECTRICIAN
Made For Working
"Some singer-songwriter types seem to spring into the world fully formed. Their first set of songs captures our imagination from the get-go and they draw comparisons to Dylan, Costello, Waits or Young. Others need a couple of tries to work out the kinks, taking time to grow and find their muse; then they spring their best work on us.
Matt The Electrician is one of the latter. While on two previous discs he's made some fine music, with Made For Working he's reached a peak. His songs have a childlike quality, a youthful sense of humor that in lesser hands might come off as downright silly. But his wordplay is deceptively sly and, like the best tunesmiths, his melodies are remarkably direct and simple.
Tunes such as "Diaryland", "Milo" and "Little Hands" are filled with lyrical wit and the occasional whistle or banjo. On the album's sole cover song, he converts Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" from a bombastic rocker into a pensive folk song. He may have matured, but you get the sense Matt is never really going to grow up." - JIM CALlGIURI

CLAY MCCLINTON
Out of the Blue
TRACK LISTING: Heartache / Left My Baby Blue / Blues in the Morning / Lonsome Time / Jermiah / Starting to Itch / Something's got a Hold on me / Far too Long / Texas Memory / Rambler / When it Rains
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Clay McClinton's musical sound is woven together with rawhide and hemp, barbwire and willow reed. It's that eclectic sound born in Texas where honky tonk, Delta blues and soulful rock meld seamlessly. Clay's debut CD, Out of the Blue, is a collection of self-penned songs that epitomize his personal blend of influences against a backdrop of stripped-down production where less is definitely more. Clay not only wrote or co-wrote the material, he also co-produced the CD not long after his career move to Nashville. The honky tonk of Heartache, horn-powered Left My Baby Blue and the Texas swing of Rambler somehow fit together like soulmates. Other cuts bear the distinct influence of Clay's blues-legend father, Delbert McClinton. Starting to Itch and When It Rains are co-writes with Delbert, but Clay's solo write, Far Too Long, displays his dad's influence as well. Being his father's son, it's not surprising that Clay's eclectic influences lean toward songwriters Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, J. J. Cale, and John Hiatt. But his personal progression also includes bluegrass greats such as Doc Watson.

McLEMORE AVENUE
926 East
11 original instrumentals recorded in Austin, Texas. Named after the street in Memphis where Stax Studios once stood, McLemore Avenue is centered around the legendary Hammond Organ and specializes in instrumental soul, R&B, jazz, surf and lounge music.
The Austin Chronicle Nov 13 2003
"As is well-known among devotees of Jimmy Smith, Booker T & the MG's, and Ramsey Lewis, the Hammond B3 is good for much, much more than churchy hymn-accompaniment. Under the right set of fingers and feet, it's capable of the ultimate soulful grooves. Locals McLemore Avenue would be easy to compare to Booker T & Co. (the name refers to the original address of Stax Studios in Memphis); in fact, that's what they're aiming for. Still, guitarist Landis Armstrong is a little more aggressive than Steve Cropper was back in the day, with an amp turned up a bit louder and a few more notes in play -- check the twang on "Texas Toast." Very much in the "Green Onions" patch is "About Face," but groove to the percussive lounge simmer of "Me Gusta" for a change of pace. "A Toy Robot!" finds the quartet surfin' 'n' spyin' with the occasional sci-fi flourish on theremin, while returning to greasy grooves for "Tree-Hug-Her" (Booker T fans, note the name of that one). "(Last of the) V-8 Interceptors" skulks around with an ominous-sounding backbeat, the perfect soundtrack for flogging your way down the interstate into a horizon full of storm clouds. There's not a bum song to be found on here; whether you're an organ aficionado or not, it's just the thing for getting down to your socks and having a funky soul party." -Jerry renshaw, Austin Chronicle

Elizabeth McQueen, Austin’s Roots Music Darling, and her band The Firebrands have completed their new tribute to the music of England’s pre-punk/pre-new wave roots music scene known as pub rock. Paying homage to such great acts as Graham Parker, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Squeeze and many others, this new CD titled Happy Doing What We’re Doing fizzles and pops with upbeat tunes culled from these English greats. Named after a Brinsley Schwartz song, the CD starts off with infectious pop courtesy of the pen of Ducks Deluxe and never lets up until the final strains of Dr. Feelgood’s That’s It I Quit have died away. Street cred (or is that pub cred?) is even provided in the person of Austin de Loneoriginal member of Eggs Over Easy, the original pub rock bandwho guests on the CD.

ELIZABETH McQUEEN and the FireBrands
The Fresh Up Club
Produced by Asleep At the Wheel's David Sanger. You heard her on the Happy Birthday, Buck Tribute, now here's her excellent full length debut CD! Features her top-notch band (Andrew Nafziger, Lindsay Greene, Chris Miller, Brian Smith) plus special guests including members of the Wheel and the Conrads!
"Every once in a while, a musician moves to Austin and knocks the town on its ear. Elizabeth McQueen is one of those. She possesses the killer combination of irrepressible energy, a sassy personality, and more talent than she's probably aware of, and it's all on display on her debut, The Fresh Up Club. McQueen has also rounded up a killer band, the Firebrands, that includes a couple of guitar hotshots, Chris Miller (Marcia Ball, Hollisters) and Andrew Nafziger (Bruce Robison, Karen Poston), plus guest shots from Casper Rawls, no slouch in the guitar department himself, as well as Dave Sanger, Jim Murphy, and John Michael Whitby, all of Asleep at the Wheel. Even with all that firepower, McQueen's voice is still the star of the show. A clear, supple instrument, it moves from the high-steppin' honky-tonk of the Robbie Fulks-penned "You Shouldn't Have" to a smooth and swinging original, "The Oldest Story," to a blowout take of Chuck Berry's "Thirty Days." ... The Fresh Up Club puts her in the company of such strong female voices from Texas as Libbi Bosworth and Rosie Flores. The road is wide open for Elizabeth McQueen." --- Jim Caligiuri

Guitarland
Guitarland is filled with wonderful jazz guitar playing by Rick McRae. Ricks' main gig is playing lead guitar behind George Strait, but on this CD he is front and center and shines on the electric and acoustic guitar, playing jazz standards and swing tunes backed by a great rhythm section and some special guests like Floyd Domino and Johnny Gimble. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those who appreciate great guitar playing.

AUDREY AULD MEZERA
Texas
Audrey Auld Mezera's third solo album isn't the first record in music history to be named Texas - and it certainly won't be the last. But let's go out on a limb here and assume it's the only one that has ever and will ever be released by a gal from the tiny Australian state of Tasmania.
It's also very likely the first album called Texas - to even have the word "Texas" in the title at all - on which the "T" word makes only a single appearance in the lyrics (the line in question, from "Missing Mez", a song for her husband.) For Audrey's Texas is not a record about a huge chunk of land or even that oft over-romanticized "Texas state of mind." It's a record about people.
It's about heroes, like Woody Guthrie, Harlan Howard, Billy Joe Shaver and Australia's Dead Ringer Band. It's about family, like her father, and lovers - like the aforementioned husband, for whom Audrey not only moved across the world, but also clear over her favorite city in the Northern hemisphere, Austin, in favor of Stinson Beach, California. It's about a "little girl lost"-turned-Texas Death Row statistic named Karla Faye Tucker. And it's also about people gathering in the studio to capture the magic moment when the here and now is transcended, and you come away with something timeless. TRACK LISTING: Love You Like The Earth / Karla Faye / My Father / Song For Harlan / Ball And Chain / Hole In My Life / Woody / Missin Mez / Billy Joe / Shine / One Eye

MATT MINOR and Shot Glass
Train To Catch
Produced by Matt with Asleep At the Wheel's David Sanger. Features Redd Volkkaert, Jon Dee Graham, Mike Hardwick, Larry Wilson, Jim Murphy, Rob Gjersoe and Haydn Vitera.
"My father's side of the family came to Texas from Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1800s. I am a direct decendant of Baily Hardeman : a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and William Hardeman; a general in the Republic of Texas army. My mother's side settled in La Grange via Prague, Czechoslovakia at the turn of the last century. My music is just my way of contributing to that rich heritage. This record is just a smattering of all the songs I've compiled about our collective experiences. I'm excited about it. I think Texas' greatest contribution to the world is not the Alamo, or the cowboy, but rather that of the ability of the individual to still assert his or herself. What makes it great is that it was, and is, a land of ass-kicking misfits."

MATT HAYDEN MINOR
Tall Tales From Houston Town
Falls somewhere between straight country and Americana wityh elements of pop and alternative. Also influenced by the twangier post-punk bands like the Long Ryders, REM and the Alarm.
"This record is kind of a tribute to the city in which I was born and raised. I kind of consider Houston to be the Politically Incorrect capital of America. Really the whole state is, but Houston is it's largest and rawest city." -Matt Hayden Minor

Shadow Figure
"Join Paul Minor as he celebrates the release of his latest album, "Shadow Figure." This all-acoustic project is reminiscent of Dylan, but with an added touch of alternative country. Piano, harmonica, bass, musical saw and fiddle combine to create an eclectic twang. Singer/songwriter Minor pens lyrics that play over and over in your head, long after the music has stopped. His gift for melodies echoes Elvis Costello's, but his Texas voice makes him truly Austin. If you're new to Paul Minor, don't miss this stand-out performance." -- Lauren Clonts TRACK LISTING: Made To Be Broken / Every Star Has a Shadow / Break It To Myself / Raincoat Song / Three on a Match / Tulips Two-Step / The Truth Is / Ordinary Gurls / My Beautiful Child / Lost Highway
