LANCE ADAMS Life's Good...Life's Great Lance wrote all ten songs and played some electric and acoustic guitar on the recordings with the help of a few great musicians who have played for the likes of Ray Price, LeAnn Rimes, Charlie Pride, Marty Stuart, Hank Williams Jr. and many others. The songs range from traditional country to Texas country. Some of the music that has spurred Lance into songwriting comes from Radney Foster, Dwight Yoakam, Alan Jackson, Chris Knight, and Bruce Robison. Some of Lance's most recent music news is that he won the Lonestar Shootout on Kicker 107 (Abilene TX) on July 18, 2003. Lance also wrote and recorded a Chevrolet commercial for Bailey Toliver Chevrolet in Haskell, TX featuring the title cut to his new CD. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Love At First Sight |

STUART ADAMSON Weekends Were Made For Living "Many of the songs reflect the love that Stuart has for Texas. The crowd pleasing shuffle, "Safety in Numbers" and the title track to his CD, Weekends Were Made For Living were both written while Stuart was living in Nashville and missing familiar stomping grounds in his Lone Star state. Even the symbol Stuart uses on his CD and website is a nostalgic nod at his Texas heritage. It's the brand his Grandfather used on their ranch in North Central Texas. Stuart's travels down the country music path have taken him to many places. From the honky-tonk heaven, Floore's Country Store outside of San Antonio, to the songwriters'circles at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, no gig is too big or too small, as long as the folks listening are having fun." TONY AIROLDI Ball In a Cage In one of his musical incarnations, Tony Airoldi was a member of country- rockers Greezy Wheels, pretty much the house band at the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters in the 1970's. He is currently performing in and around Austin with Tommy Elskes and with his own group Smokin' Hyenas. "Now and again a release comes in I know nothing about; sometimes putting one on is like opening a thoughtful gift - a surprise, something you wouldnt have gotten for yourself, but welcome and refreshing. This experience was just that- a simple impeccably produced collection of original instrumentals, Airoldis acoustic guitar complemented by Rummel and el Salehs keyboards. Normally, I like words with my music, and tend to forget the impact and importance of other musical expressions; this is a welcome reminder. Whether for meditation, dinner parties, roadtrips or housecleaning, his compositions soothe the soul, energize the spirit and tickle the ears, a celebration of the diversity of Austin made music. A perfect gift for all seasons and any occasion, this little jewel mixes Texas roots with classical sensibilities. My prediction is youll want two at least- one to keep and one to give." -Eve McArthur, Music City Texas LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Farm To Market |

NOLAN BRUCE ALLEN Salutes the Bob Wills Era Vol.1 "NOLAN began his professional career in 1962. While serving our country in Korea he played lead guitar on Army-broadcast country music radio shows. Later in Europe he with his Army bands maintained a grueling schedule of performance dates at Enlisted Men's, Non-Commissioned Officers and Officers Clubs. Often, they opened shows or provided backing for various other artists booked from America to entertain our Troops. NBA and his LONE STAR WESTERN SWING BAND have performed Western Swing Music since the early 1970's. Cookin' up to nine-piece band includes Steel Guitar, Fiddle, Piano, Twin Guitars, Saxophone/Clarinet, Harmonica, Bass and Drums. He was profoundly influenced by the great and legendary Bob Wills - down to the naming of his band after "discovering" the all-time King of Western Swing in the late sixties. NBA's true and heartfelt passion is Western Swing Music although he sometimes includes other big-band tunes and classic country hits in shows. His musical peers dubbed him New York's "KING OF WESTERN SWING" due to his genuine Western Swing style, delivery and vast amount of Western Swing material he knows. To just say he loves it is a huge understatement - it's in his pores." Randy Bolam - Western Swing Drummer North Tonawanda, New York LISTEN - MP3 Clip! There Ain't a Cow In Texas |

JASON ALLEN Something I Dreamed Jason Allen, a native Texan, was born in Pasadena in 1976. His parents, Wesley and Jean Sligar, bought him his first guitar when he was only five years old. He started singing and playing Elvis Presley tunes for his family and friends. Growing up, he listened to his parents music, which consisted of Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and Lefty Frizzell, to name only a few of his musical influences. By the age of 10 he had found a love for entertaining a crowd, and began performing at various oprys in Texas. With the help of his mom and dad, he formed his own band when he was 13, and has been playing around Texas ever since. Jason spent two years in Nashville learning about the music business and developing his writing. Upon returning to Texas, he joined the former band of Doug Supernaw, who then became the Tearjearkers. Jason signed a contract with Glad Music and the legendary 'D' Records. Shortly after, Jason spent some time in Nashville making contacts and writing with well-known writers. During the six months he was there, Jason also gathered songs for his first album. He came back to Texas and recorded the album that Texas artist Clay Blaker, produced at Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville. SAM BAKER Mercy Sam Baker may be the best songwriter Ive ever heard Hes extraordinary. -Walt Wilkins on his debut CD, Baker reveals a poetic genius so straightforward and undemanding it evokes wonder. Rarely do such plain truths do lifeor listenersjustice. Laced with quiet lamentation, Bakers lyrics lay bare the lies we live in pursuit of dreams. Mercifully, his songs are anything but morose. Bakers music celebrates equally the ugly and the exquisite, the mundane and the mysteriousgiving us all a reason to take another look at ourselves and each other. Guest vocalistsincluding Jessi Colter, the inimitable 70s outlaw songstress and wife of the late Waylon Jenningsare paired with Baker, whose Dylan-like voice is as dusty as a dirt road in a drought. Elegant arrangements and inspired performances are provided by Texas hill country rising star Walt Wilkins and Nashville session pros Tim Lorsch, Mike Daly, Ron de la Vega, and Mickey Grimm. The result is magic. Mercy reflects a broad range of influencesfrom the music of Woody Guthrie and Townes Van Zandt to the novels of Jorge Luis Borges and Leo Tolstoy. It's so easy in this digital age for musicians to record their own CD. Good friends sitting in a circle, pouring their hearts out and having a party in the zero pressure atmosphere of my Hill Country home on the shores of Lake LBJ is exactly what I did with this collection of Texas music from me and my old friends. "No Pain" is a compilation of 18 new and old songs I've written over the years with the exception of one Honky Tonk standard written by my song writing hero, the late great Harlan Howard. KEVIN BANFORD King of the Thrift Store Cowboys "...Ten tracks, all top of the line and solid country, all of the material is original. From the opening strains of "Good Enough For Me" to the final notes of the Texas dance hall theme "Texas Love", this is pure and unadulterated C&W. Banford's project encompasses all the elements that make C&W music distinctive and soulful. More, he has embraced the sharp edges that make it worthy of being included within the sacred space known as the Bakersfield Sound. Of particular interest is "Cowgirl's Rodeo", a personal favorite since it is a tune written very specifically from a cowgirl's point of view. Also worthy of special note is "Pride in My Misery", the title cut, and Banford's own autobiographical theme song - "Guitars, Guns, God, and Girls". While the songwriting is exceptional and fresh, Banford's vocal style isconstantly fused with energy and style throughout. The artistry of the musicians in Banford's live band, The Bakersfield Boys, goes without saying. Special guests on the recorded project include legends Chris Gaffney, Wyman Reese, Greg Leisz, and a young up and comer on fiddle, Gabe Witcher....He stands out, just as his talent continues to stand out. MIKE BARFIELD Living Stereo It's probably no coincidence that Mike Barfield's new album begins with a song that mentions "The Twist." Living Stereo is filled with vintage sounds and retro stylistic jags that range from the big city electrified Chicago blues of Howlin' Wolf and Junior Wells to Stax soul. Barfield even reaches back for a great take on "You've Got What It Takes" by the criminally under-covered soul giant Joe Tex. I suspect the whole affair reflects Barfield's formative listening habits in the days before we had digital recording and CD players.TRACK LISTING: Twist It / I've Been Abused / You're Driving Me Crazy / Look At Me / Confession Time / Cramp Your Style / Ask My Baby / Tomorrow Night / You Got What It Takes / Can I Change My Mind / Lovers Prison / She's A Yum Yum / Signed, Sealed and Delivered LISTEN - MP3 Clip! BASTARD SONS OF JOHNNY CASH Mile Markers When it comes to all-out, knocked-flat awesome country music, there aren't a whole lot of groups who can do it as well as the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash. Right from the start they were cool enough that their "adoptive father" didn't mind at all the use of his name; and right from the start they've shown that California cool country style that hasn't been seen since the resurgence of the Bakersfield sound back in the mid-80's. Their newest album, "Mile Markers," continues in that tradition, with twelve new songs written and arranged by lead man Mark Stuart (writing with Deane Cote on "Night Comes Down" ), and released on his own brand-new imprint label, Texicali Records (which chooses as its logo a pretty awesome combination of the Texas, California, and Mexican flags). Stuart also produces the disc as part of the "Texcali 3," along with fellow band mates Mike Turner and Alan Mirikitani. And while Stuart handles a goodly chunk of the business, this is clearly a group effort, with some staggeringly awesome sounds from serious players (including former Yoakam backers Taras Prodoniuk, Jim Christie, and Skip Edwards). With his music, Mark Stuart doesn't just sing this homage to his western homeland - he paints it. BLUE COMBO Sassy Sauce "...a 16 track collection of studio and live tracks that nicely showcases the strength and approach of the band, sometimes sounding like nothing less than Koko Taylor fronting one of Louis Jordan's hot swing outfits of the '40s." -John Wooley, Tulsa World "The playing on this disc is nothing less than world-class. It's a credit to the musicians that there is no discernible difference between what's live and what's Memorex." -Billy Berkenbile, Spot Magazine "Sassy Sauce sums it up quite nicely. Blue Combo is an Oklahoma gang of five blues minstrels in and around the Tulsa area. Well, take me back to Tulsa! These guys - and gal - are talented and it shows on this release. They like to call themselves an obscure cover band. I think that's peachy. But I would go a few steps further and say that Blue Combo is a solid fusion of swing, jazz, early R&B, blues and a heaping portion of New Orleans thrown in there too. It's a good mix and the group makes it all sound easy. The tunes are great. The compositions are sweet. It's an exciting disc to spin. 16 tracks, 15 tracks really and a little 36 second riff. The longest track on the disk is 10 plus minutes and worth every second of it. This is vintage stuff and I mean that in the best possible way. To their credit, it's almost impossible to tell the live stuff from the studio stuff if you didn't hear people hollering in the background. The band is tight and knows how to burn a barn. Rusty Miller handles the ax with style and grace. Couple him with Steve Elmore on ivory keys and Rebecca Ungerman on wailing vocals and you got yourself a blues experience. When guitar battles keyboard on "Bayou Blood," it's a ton of fun. Listen to Rebecca turn up the smoldering sultry vocals on the Simone track "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Tommy Tex Waggoner pulls some great stunts on the upright bass while drummer Robbie Armstrong pops out that Bo Diddley beat like a man on a mission. It's the kind of album you listen to and say to yourself: man, I would love to see these cats live. Check out the jam on tracks like "T Bone" or "Greasy Gravy". My favorite Blue Combo tune has to be "Tight Fit". The instrumental tracks really showcase what makes this band such a treasure. If you are looking for some really terrific blues with a unique sensibility, look no further than Blue Combo and their Sassy Sauce. Great stuff.." - Bill Fountain LISTEN - MP3 Clip! JANE BOND Volume 1 Jane Bond's debut release is an honest reflection of both her own traditional musical upbringing and of the rich history in American music that we all share. Originally from Massachusetts, Jane was born into a family of music. 'Grandpa sang barbershop with his friends and various swing songs with Grandma. Grandma had been playing piano professionally in the silent theatre since she was eleven years old, and had an amazing repertoire. She taught me some old jazz standards and when she couldn't be there to back me up, Mom would.' Jane studied piano and cello as a child and when she got her first guitar at the age of 15 she began to back herself singing the songs of such artists as Mance Lipscomb and Bessie Smith. After a brief visit to Austin during high school, her mind was made up. Upon graduation she returned to Austin, guitar in hand, to pursue her dream. It was here she found kinship in the diverse Austin music scene. 'The old timey songs I thought obsolete were surprisingly familiar to musicians I met in Texas.' Produced by Nathan Hamilton, Volume 1 features not only original material written by herself and songwriter Mike Stevenson, but also a few gems from her heroes Bessie and Mance. Recorded mostly live in the studio, Volume 1 captures the pure essence of Jane Bond's earthy sound, with instrumentation that lends itself to jazz, blues and country. A sure bet for those who enjoy their music straight up, unpretentious and rooted firmly in tradition. "Jane Bonds vol. 1. is one of those rare recordings that conveys the same energy as a live performance. This is in part due to Bonds bluesy voice, which leads the listener straight to the emotional center of every song. In "Rescue Me," a gentle serenade to a lover, she blends knowing sensuality with comfortable vulnerability in such a way that makes it hard not to fall in love a little yourself. In "Cheatin Song," an ultimatum to an unfaithful man, her voice alternates between a melodic scream and a heartbreaking cry, laying bare the mess of sadness, frustration and anger that betrayal can arouse in a heart. The players on the album speak as much to the listener as Bond does. David Carroll, Mike Stevenson and others all match undeniable musicianship with fun and open interpretation. Jane Bond does have a great live show, but she cant play all the time. Thanks to vol. 1, you can approximate the experience whenever you want." -Elizabeth McQueen LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Smack Dab |

MICHAEL SHANE BORDEN & THE DIESEL KINGS The Modern Sounds Of Michael Shane Borden & The Diesel Kings Michael Shane Borden is no newcomer to country music. A veteran lead guitarist and singer with 25 years of honky-tonk playing under his belt, his second CD "The Modern Sounds of Michael Shane Borden and the Diesel Kings" is the culmination of a lot of miles, both literally and figuratively. His style pays homage to the legends of Honky-Tonk music while incorporating elements of rockabilly, roots rock, and hillbilly. He jokingly refers to his music as "post-modern hillbilly punk." Mostly self-penned, this CD includes many tongue-in-cheek songs like "Alcohol of Fame" (previously released) and "Heartbreak 101," some of which have already become favorites in the clubs. BRIGHT LIGHTS SOCIETY self titled Classics, standards or plain-old great swing. That is what the Bright Lights Society delivers on their 10 song eponymously titled debut. The group features two very talented women from Austin, Texas: Lauren Gurgiolo on guitar and Elizabeth McQueen on vocals (now the singer and guitarist with Asleep At The Wheel). The group is rounded out by Ponder East on tenor sax, Dylan Jones on bass, David Lazaroff on organ and Dave Sanger on the drums. The jazz combo flows effortlessly from classics such as Bye Bye Blackbird to self-penned tunes in the standard style (Waited Too Long, Sad And Blue). This one is getting a hearty approval from TMRU's own Jim Lutz!!! He says "Strongly recommended!" and he don't say that too often. They have performed with the likes of Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, and the Dixie Chicks. Expect acoustic country arrangements with light percussion and some great session musicians including Chip Dolan on piano and accordian...an excellent first outing from this duo raised in Kentucky and planted in one of the hottest musical beds in the country." -Sing Out! COLIN BROOKS Blood and Water TRACK LISTING: Blood In the Water / Wheels On the Ground / Water In the Sky / This Old Guitar /' Looking For a Man / Heart On My Sleeve / Cornbread / Jenny Was a Keeper / All Your Love / All I Can Take / Heavy Load / Motherland “Blood and Water is spare and ragged...with skillfully told tales and wistful melodies” -Austin Chronicle "Press a Bob Schneider fan, past or present, hard enough and you ll eventually get to bedrock when she (if there are male Schneider fans they keep quiet about it) finally confesses, He's so cute. If Schneider's looks can trump his horrid little jingles, Brooks should be acing the Austin Chronicle awards and knocking off any Hollywood star he fancies, because he not only has that scruffy, moody Colin Farrell thing going for him, he's the real deal. Calling himself a slinger-songwriter, Brooks is a pretty fair picker himself, long working as a sideman, in Taos, New York City and, for the last three years, Austin, on guitars, dobro and lap steel, but, resisting the enormous and understandable temptation to round up some of Austin s finest, he s cut the most basic of albums, one man, one guitar, two mikes. Oh, and harmonies by two hundred fellow Kerrville New Folk 2003 winners. OK, just two of them, Anais Mitchell on Water In The Sky and Jonathan Brook on the sensational Jenny Was A Keeper and the whimsical Cornbread, on both of which he s joined by Tim Beattie. Actually, this was originally intended to be demos for his next real album, but when Brooks and his backer heard the raw power of these 12 tracks, one, Motherland, recorded on John Aiellii s KUT show Eklektikos last June, and many recorded the week they were written, a couple on the same day, they realized they had a viable album right there. Maybe it s because it s so easy to find great support in Austin that this stripped to the bone album is so effective, or maybe its because Brooks, in any setting, is a singer-songwriter to watch out for." -3rd Coast LISTEN - MP3 Clip! FRENCHIE BURKE Frenchie Burke's Dance Album "A lot of great things have happened to me in my 26 years as KKYX disc jockey, but none greater than being asked to write the liner notes fro Frenchie Burke's Dance Album. He takes such country standards as jambalaya and Pride and mixes them with cajun classics like Big Momou and Cajun Stripper, yet he keeps the dance hall sound. Here's a word of warning. Listen to the CD with an extra pair of shoes because you'll wear out one pair on the dance floor. It's Frenchie Burke at his best - too cool, too Cajun and too country."
